LUDWIG MEIDNER, Bernstadt 1884 – 1966 Darmstadt. Selbstbildnis, radierend vor dem Spiegel im Atelier.Original etching, 1924.

LUDWIG MEIDNER
Bernstadt 1884 – 1966 Darmstadt

An Expressionist painter, printmaker and writer, Meidner was briefly apprenticed in the building trade before studying art, firstly, 1903-05, at the Royal School of Art in Breslau, and then, 1906-07, in Paris, where he attended both the Academy Julian and Cormoron’s studio.

In 1912, four years after his return to Berlin, he developed an ultra expressionist style in a series of apocalyptic landscapes and his studio became a place of gathering for the avant-garde. With Jakob Steinhardt and Richard Janthur, Meidner founded Die Pathetiker. They held a single exhibition at Der Sturm Gallery in 1912.

After WWI, through the 1920’s, he turned to Jewish religious subjects, in particular a series of prophets and by 1923 had eschewed Expressionism. He ceased etching after 1925.

In his printmaking, which he probably started about 1913, Meidner focussed on portraiture. He etched forty self-portraits over the decade he was active in the medium.

Meidner’s thirty-first self portrait. Above his head is the single gas jet, as described by George Grosz in his Autobiography

(Meidner) was a strange little spirit who only came alive at night. (He) lived in a hole of a garret…Right next to the door as one entered was an old iron, pot-bellied stove. Beside it was a high mound …concealed in semi-obscurity because the sole source of illumination … came from a single gas jet suspended from the ceiling… Whenever Meidner gesticulated, which he did frequently and passionately … a cloud of dust would rise… We called this rain of ashes “The Destruction of Pompei”.

The artist comments

The actual name on the lantern clock is “ Nicholas Bodle of East Grinstead”, which I changed to Nicholas , for artistic reason. I have owned the clock for many years. It dates back to 1700, and there is another example at Ightham Mote, Kent (National Trust).

FRANK HENRY MASON, Seaton Carew, Durham 1876 – 1965 Greenwich. Windmills at Zaandam. Original etching, c1920.

FRANK HENRY MASON
Seaton Carew, Durham 1876 – 1965 Greenwich

Mason was a cadet at the naval school ship HMS Conway from 1880 to 1882, and then spent a little time at sea before training as a marine engineer with Parsons, working in Hartlepool, Leeds and Scarborough.

In around 1894 he settled in Scarborough, where in his spare time he had art lessons at the School of Art and made regular trips to visit Staithes, where a number of artists were congregated.

Mason abandoned engineering in 1898 to become a fulltime artist. In 1901 he was a founding member of the Staithes Art Club. Like several of the Staithes artists of the time Mason visited and found inspiration in Holland, exhibiting a Dutch subject in the 1904 Staithes Art Club exhibition.

During the First World War Mason was a shipping war artist in the RNVR. He probably did not take up etching until after 1918, at the height of the Etching Boom, when he joined and exhibited with the newly established Society of Graphic Art in London.

Sturges worked in etching and drypoint, producing Boston scenes, figure studies engaged in various activities and trades and professions, and portraits. His exhibitions usually sold out.

The Norfolk coastline at Brancaster has a strong appeal for Jeff and on visits in recent years he has used thin plastic sheets which can be scratched into on the spot in quick sketches that are printable back in his studio. Most are only printed in single impressions.
