Angelika
Kauffmann met the German archaeologist and
art historian, who inspired the neo-classical
movement, in 1763 in Rome, where he had recently
been appointed Superintendent of Antiquities
by the Pope. He commissioned the twenty-three
year old artist to paint his portrait.
Winckelmann
wrote in a letter dated 1764 “ My
portrait has been painted by a remarkable
lady, a German artist. She is very strong
in oil portraits, mine cost thirty sequins,
and is a half-length seated figure. She has
etched it herself as a present to me ...”
(The
painting is now in the Zurich Kunsthaus)
