CATHERINE MAUD NICHOLS R.E.
Norwich 1847 – 1923 Norwich
Etcher, painter, poet and novelist, though she claimed
to be entirely self-taught, Catherine (Kate) Nichols spent two terms
at Norwich School of Art in 1874/75 and in 1875 produced her first
dated etching.
Her earliest visits to France, in 1876-78, are reflected in etchings
of Normandy and Barbizon, exhibited in consecutive years at the
Royal Academy 1877-1879.
She would continue to exhibit at the R.A. till 1908.
With the founding of the R.E. in 1880, she exhibited in the first exhibition
in 1881 and in 1882 was elected a Fellow. She exhibited with them through
till 1919.
She would also become a regular exhibitor with the Norwich Art Circle
from its foundation in 1885.
In 1889, when the Woodpecker Art Club was established in Norwich,
she was made its President.
Her first solo exhibition took place in 1892, in London April/May
and then in Norwich.
An article was devoted to her work in The Studio in 1903 and another
in 1907 after she exhibited at the Paris Salon.
