WINTER
SELECTION
 As
has become customary, the winter catalogue this year,
2013, comprises a mixture of artists, periods, nationalities,
and themes which reflect the rich diversity that
prints afford.
Generally
the prints are arranged in chronological sequence
but I have exploited occasional pleasing juxtapositions
of old and new, such as Sylvia Gosse’s portrait of her father in his library with Dürer’s woodcut portrayal of St Jerome as a renaissance scholar at work in his study. The Gosse would equally have complemented the fine William Strang portraits of Kipling, Hardy and Tennyson, all friends of Edmund Gosse and regular visitors to the Gosse household.
Perennial
interests are represented in various landscapes (including
a couple of rare early Daubignys); London street
scenes and other city views (including an airy, impressionistic
lithographic view of Lindsey Row, Chelsea by Whistler
and a small group of ‘new’ Walcots which are also
added into the Walcot
exhibition on this site );
prints by women (some, such as Elizabeth Brownlow,
new to me); portraits of artists and writers; images
of cats; and oddities relating to printmaking, in
one specific instance a delightful etching of pots
on the studio windowsill by Martin Hardie, enhanced
by a punning pencil tribute to his friends and teachers
Constance Pott and Frank Short.
