The POWER of the PRESS

The Power of the Press, Elizabeth Harvey-LeeA selection of 'graphic' images

The particular integration of black ink and white paper that results from the passage through the press seems to give an enhancement and authority to an image. This is attested in the accrued meanings of such everyday expressions as graphic and impressive, which reflect print terminology.

The very ability, intrinsic to the majority of printmaking techniques, to multiply identical images, results not only in the possibility of their wide dissemination but through the resulting familiarity the most telling obtain iconic status.

The printmaking processes provide a rich variety of surface qulaities both linear and tonal that are unobtainable by means of other artistic media. This is perhaps particular noticeable in the profundity of black made available by ink transferred from a lithographic stone, or a copper plate worked in drypoint or the complexity of multiple striations of the serrated mezzotint rocker.

Power of the Press, Elizabeth Harvey-LeeThis catalogue selection, as well as some iconic images and rich examples of drypoint or etched hatching by Rembrandt, Samuel Palmer, Vogeler and Muirhead Bone, includes a section devoted to the modern revival of mezzotint.
